Phakic intraocular lenses represent a new technology that treats nearsightedness. Delmar Surgical and Cosmetic Treatment Center is pleased to offer this safe and effective procedure to patients in the Wilmington, DE and Newark, DE areas. In this procedure, our physicians implant a small, thin lens into the eye to improve the quality of vision. Phakic lenses offer an alternate option to patients who are not good candidates for LASIK surgery due to a thin cornea or a high level of myopia (nearsightedness).
Phakic lenses are made of plastic or silicone and inserted directly into the eye, behind the iris. The term"phakic" means that the lens is implanted without removing the eye's natural lens. Phakic lenses work in the same way as eyeglasses and contact lenses, by bending the light entering the eye so that the image focuses properly on the eye's retina.
During your consultation, one of our physicians will examine you and your eyes to determine whether you are a good candidate for phakic lens implantation surgery. If you wear contact lenses, you may need to stop wearing them for a few weeks to ensure accurate measurements. You and your doctor will discuss your expectations of the procedure, your medical history, and ocular history. The doctor will recommend the type of lens and implantation which will work best for your situation.
About a week before the surgery, you will undergo laser iridotomy to prepare your eye for the phakic lens. You will be given eye drops to make the pupil smaller and to numb your eye. The doctor will then make a tiny hole in the outside edge of the iris with a laser. This prevents pressure or fluid buildup after the phakic lens is inserted.
During the procedure itself, you will be given a local anesthetic and possibly a sedative to help you relax. The doctor will make an incision in your eye and insert the phakic lens. The lens is positioned properly in the eye, and then if needed, the incision will be stitched. Eye drops will be placed in your eye, and you will be given a shield to wear for protection. The entire process takes less than half an hour.
You may experience light sensitivity or the feeling that something is in your eye after the procedure. You will be given eye drops to use for a few weeks to reduce inflammation and prevent infection. Your vision will stabilize over the next two to four weeks, and any discomfort will gradually disappear.
