At Lavenburg Medical Group, our eye doctors work hard to earn your trust. After all, we know that you would not trust your vision to just anyone! As part of our commitment to providing superior eye care, we have a full-time ophthalmologist and two medical optometrists. Our experienced, professional eye care team allows us to offer an elevated level of vision service to our patients.
Our ophthalmologist Dr. Douglas Lavenburg is an eye doctor specializing in the medical and surgical care of eyes and the prevention and treatment of eye disease. Dr. Lavenburg is trained to provide a full spectrum of advanced eye care, including treating external eye diseases, eye lid plastic surgery, glaucoma, cataract surgery, keratorefractive surgery and laser surgery. As a medical doctor, Dr. Lavenburg is licensed to practice medicine and surgery, which is different from an optician who can only design, verify and fit eyeglass lenses and contact lenses to correct vision. Dr. Lavenburg is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
As an ophthalmologist, Dr. Lavenburg is much more than just an optometrist and is able to provides an elevated level of medical service for vision problems and diseases that would not be available through an optician. You may benefit from scheduling an appointment with Dr. Lavenburg should you experience a decrease in vision (even a temporary one), distorted vision, “floaters” (specks in your vision) or flashes of light, haloes around lights, an eye injury or eye pain, red eye, bulging in one or both eyes, misaligned eyes, double vision, the loss of peripheral vision, high blood pressure, and double vision.
Certain eye diseases like glaucoma can have a devastating effect on vision if they are not treated early. However, it is also easy to miss the warning signs for these diseases. Consequently, regular screenings with an ophthalmologist like Dr. Lavenburg are essential to successful early detection. Individuals with African-American background are at increased risk for developing glaucoma before the age of 60; these individuals should schedule regular screenings starting at 40 years. All adults age 65 and older should schedule a screening with an ophthalmologist at least every one or two years.
Our two talented optometrists, Dr. Kimberly Bristow and Dr. Meredith Cohen-Weinberger, are also part of the Lavenburg Medical Group team. Dr. Bristow and Dr. Cohen-Weinberger hold degrees as “Doctors of Optometry” and are licensed to practice optometry. This includes examining the eye for the purpose of prescribing and dispensing corrective lenses, screening vision to detect certain eye abnormalities, and prescribing medications for certain eye diseases.
As optometrists, Dr. Bristow and Dr. Cohen-Weinberger provide optometric eye exams to asses, measure and diagnose eye disease. They also fit eyewear, including glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses and safety glasses, to meet your specific vision needs. Both our optometrists work closely with Dr. Lavenburg to co-manage vision diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
